Elul: A Musical Journey Towards the Days of Awe

YITZHAK YEDID: PIANO & VOICE

The concert, piano and voice, will feature treasured melodies including Ki Hinei Kachomer B’yad Hayotzer, Ohilla La’El, Ha’Mevorach B’fi Kol Ma’arach, Sha’arei Shamayim Ptach, Et Sha’arei Ratzon, and Achot Ketannah, alongside Yitzhak Yedid’s own piano music. An concert of prayer, melody and contemplation: a musical preparation for Yamim Nora'im.

Elul is a time of preparation. It is the month before Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, a time to stop, look inward, remember and prepare for the year ahead.

For me, Elul is also a time of listening. Many of the niggunim (melodies) associated with this period have been passed from generation to generation, carried in the voices of people who sang them in synagogues and homes. Some are Hasidic niggunim, some come from Ashkenazi and Eastern European traditions, and others belong to the Sephardi and Mizrahi Jewish world.

I grew up with this diversity. My father, an amateur cantor, introduced me to the Aleppo Jewish traditions of Baqashot and Piyyutim, while my mother encouraged me to learn Western classical piano. These two worlds became the foundation of my musical life. In this concert, I bring them together through voice and piano.

The programme moves gradually towards the Days of Awe, from yearning and contemplation, through memories of Jewish life and tradition, to the prayers of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. Alongside the traditional melodies, I play my own improvised piano music, allowing the old melodies to enter a contemporary musical space.
