The Concert

A unique solo recital for piano and voice exploring the sacred musical heritage of the Jewish people. Drawing on ancient liturgical traditions, medieval Jewish poetry and cantorial melodies, Yitzhak Yedid brings these centuries-old traditions to life through his distinctive voice as both pianist and cantor.

Blending tradition with contemporary musical expression, the recital offers an intimate journey through the sounds, prayers and musical memory of Jewish communities across generations.

The Medieval Sephardic Heritage

The Jews of medieval Spain, known as Sephardim, experienced one of the most remarkable periods of cultural flourishing among the Jewish communities of Europe. Under Muslim rule, particularly during the period of Moorish Spain, Jewish communities prospered for centuries, from the Islamic conquest of Spain beginning in 711 until the final loss of Granada to the Christian forces of Ferdinand and Isabella in 1492.

The Jews had suffered greatly under Visigothic rule, and the invading Moors in the eighth century were welcomed by many as liberators. Seven centuries later, in the landmark year that saw Christopher Columbus sail westward and the Muslim rulers expelled from Granada, the Sephardic Jews were expelled from the Iberian Peninsula and established new homes in North Africa and the Ottoman Empire, where many flourishing Jewish communities emerged.

Jewish scholars, scientists, philosophers, translators, mathematicians and musicians were highly valued at both Moorish and Christian courts, and continued to contribute significantly to the intellectual and cultural life of the lands in which they lived.

The history of medieval Spain was complex, marked by periods of coexistence and cultural exchange alongside deep religious and political conflict. Nevertheless, Jewish communities survived and flourished, producing great works of philosophy, mystical theology, literature and music.

The Sephardic Jews passed on a remarkable and living tradition of sacred and secular song, preserved orally across generations, often by the women of the Sephardic community. This repertoire was lovingly preserved and developed over the centuries, with new songs often adopting the musical practices of the “faraway lands” in which the scattered Sephardim found themselves.

Music, like poetry, provides a means of preserving a culture in a way that is not tied to one location. Through their songs, ballads and romances, displaced Jews carried with them memories of the joys of their Spanish homeland, preserving a musical heritage that continues to live across centuries and continents.

Yedid has been honored as the Azrieli Laureate for Jewish music and is the recipient of the Israel Prime Minister's Prize for Composers and the Landau Prize for Performing Arts.

Yitzhak Yedid is an Israeli-Australian pianist and composer whose music bridges cultures and traditions. Born in Jerusalem and raised in a musically inclined family, his father, an amateur cantor, played a significant role in his upbringing, instilling the traditions of Aleppo Jewish liturgical chanting, with a particular focus on Baqashot, Piyyutim, and Niggunim. Yedid’s heritage includes a Syrian-Jewish father and an Iraqi-Jewish mother, giving him deep roots in the Mizrahi musical and spiritual tradition.Yedid has received major international recognition, including the Azrieli Prize in Jewish Music, the Landau Prize, and a Sidney Myer Creative Fellowship. His works have been performed and commissioned by leading orchestras, ensembles, and festivals across Australia, Europe, and America.Yedid has developed a distinctive artistic voice that combines structural depth with improvisatory freedom. His musical aesthetics draw on chanting Niggunim and Western piano music, seamlessly integrating them into contemporary works that are at once meditative, expressive, and occasionally provocative. His compositions often convey narratives of memory, longing, and cultural identity, creating immersive sound worlds where tradition and modernity meet.
